Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the components that contributes to English learners achieving their full potential. The purpose of this study is to investigate the vocabulary learning strategies (VLSs) by collecting survey data from 100 first-year students who enrolled in the Faculty of English at University of Foreign Languages, Hue University. The research findings indicate that the majority of the students understand the critical nature of vocabulary acquisition and that the majority of the students employ above-average frequency of vocabulary learning strategies. Of the five VLSs categories, the metacognitive strategies were the most popular and frequently employed by the students, while the social strategies were the least frequently used. The research has yielded some recommendations that might be used as a guide for teaching and learning vocabulary.
