Abstract

This study compares and contrasts the formation methods and usage contexts of slang among Vietnamese and Korean youth in order to identify cultural and social similarities and differences. Adopting a qualitative approach, the study draws on data collected between 2020 and 2025 from social media platforms, school-themed films, entertainment programs, and selected academic studies. Slang items were categorized and analyzed using a comparative method. The findings indicate that youth in both countries use slang to express personal identity, linguistic creativity, and sensitivity to trends. However, Korean slang is closely associated with popular culture, whereas Vietnamese slang is strongly influenced by social media. The study clarifies the role of slang in contemporary youth communication and suggests its potential application in foreign language education.
