A STUDY OF APICAL SOUNDS IN OLD SINO-VIETNAMESE

Language is an immensely rich cultural treasure, and the study of ancient languages plays a crucial role in reconstructing the history of human communication and cognition In research on Old Chinese and Old Sino-Vietnamese, initial consonants—particularly apical (coronal) consonants—are of central importance for the reconstruction of phonological systems. This paper adopts methods of data collection and comparative analysis between Old Chinese and Old Sino-Vietnamese, combining phonetic analysis with historical-comparative approaches to identify phonetic characteristics and the origins of Sino-Vietnamese readings. The results indicate that many apical initials, when transmitted into Vietnamese, reflect structural differences between the two phonological systems, resulting in divergences between Old Sino-Vietnamese and later Sino-Vietnamese pronunciations. These findings help clarify processes of phonological change and contribute to a better understanding of the historical relationship between Vietnamese and Chinese.
