Abstract

This study aims to classify common lexical errors and analyze their underlying causes in Vietnamese-Korean translation by Vietnamese students. Using a survey design with both quantitative and qualitative analysis, the study collected and analyzed 281 lexical errors from 60 mid-term test papers of Korean-major students at a university in Central Vietnam. The results reveal three main error categories: "inappropriate lexical choice" was the most prevalent (53%), followed by "omission of words/phrases" (32%), and "word order errors" (15%). The analysis of causes, based on Richards' (1971) theoretical framework, indicates that these errors primarily stem from intralingual errors and interference errors. The study proposes several pedagogical solutions aimed at improving the quality of Vietnamese-Korean translation training and students' lexical competence.
