Abstract

The goal of this study is to identify the linguistic tasks that export workers will encounter while working abroad through a task-based needs analysis. In the first phase of the study, we proposed an initial list of specialized target tasks that laborers would need to learn in order to successfully communicate in their work place. This list was derived from careful analysis of the existing literature and confirmation and clarification from interviews with five laborers. During the second stage, a survey of needs and difficulty levels from 40 laborers and 12 English instructors was conducted. The tasks were stratified further based on the results and provided information for the design of an English course curriculum for export workers.
