Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the differences between lexico-semantic features of lexical expressions and cognitive semantic features of conceptual metaphoric expressions. Based on the theoretical framework of lexical semantics, cognitive semantics and Vietnamese educational philosophy, the author firstly collected 1251 lexical expressions and 713 metaphoric expressions of education from 9 Vietnamese educational articles. Next, the lexical expressions were described in terms of semantic features and classified into 5 semantic fields; the cognitive metaphoric expressions were described in terms of cognitive features and classified into 15 models of cognitive metaphors of education. Finally, the author compared 2 approaches of lexical semantics and cognitive semantics to these expressions to find out the possible linguistic, cognitive or cultural-educational factors that may affect to these features and suggest some applications in teaching and translation
