Abstract

Over the past few years, the application of the Communicative Language Teaching method has been widely adopted. This marked the beginning of a major change in the language teaching and learning at Thuong Mai University (which was known as Vietnam University of Commerce). And students’ English proficiency as well as communicative ability has been improved remarkably. As a teacher in the Faculty of English at Thuong Mai University, from her own observations and experience, the author has noticed that there are many ways to motivate the first-year non-English major students in English lessons. Among them, the use of group work activities has received more emphasis. Nevertheless, teachers have faced a lot of challenges in implementing and managing groups in English lessons. As a result, she has decided to carry out a research into “Using the group work activity to enhance the positiveness and proactiveness for first year English non-major students in Thuong Mai University”. This study is intended to make a modest contribution to an increased understanding of using group work in English lessons at Thuong Mai University.
