The complement is an important grammar point for teaching and learning Chinese, among which compound-tendency complements can be considered a challenging grammar point for students when they use it. It is not difficult to grasp the original meaning of this type of complement, but the extended meaning easily causes confusion, so students either avoid using it or use it incorrectly. This study was conducted to investigate the common mistakes made by third-year students majoring in Chinese language, thereby finding the causes to help students overcome difficulties when using the extended meaning of the complement. Data were collected through an online questionnaire. Research results show that the highest error rate is concentrated in 4 types of 起来 (qilai),过来(guolai),下来 (xialai),过去 (guoqu).
